So, I've been making art in 160x144px canvas for a while. for those who don't know, this is the exact size of the OG gameboy screen. And just for fun, I've decided to slap some art in GBStudio to see how it would look and... It kinda rocks?
Of course, some of the art is too detailed to run some have too many unique 8x8 tiles, making them glitch and some have way too many colors to be supported, even in color mode.
The thing is I have art made specifically to work on hardware (respecting the tile/color limit) and some that just kinda work anyways and...
Yeah. Somehow, I made a small art gallery that can be dumped as a rom and in theory, can run in hardware (I can't test it properly, since I don't really have hardware to test it). It's really barebones - You can look at the art and change them with the arrow keys/d-pad. And like, the only image that lost significant detail was Lilith (scene 4).
Here's the gallery running in the in-engine preview/test build. This image has 230 unique 8x8 tiles. The engine only supports 192 unique tiles, but it runs fine. I love how intuitive the software is, you can just change palettes on the fly.
Neat little thing, this GBStudio. I wonder if I can make something cool like that in the future. Art galleries and such. Huh.
